Volunteer Sitters

ELISE VAN GINKEL AND FAMILY

Our first experience with WAGS was an information session at the Sequoia library. We were so impressed with the WAGS dog and her trainer that day. The trainer demonstrated how the dog could unzip a coat and pick up keys repeatedly and patiently. Soon after, we contacted WAGS and met Program Director Kelly O'Ferrell at our first Volunteer Orientation session. We learned basic commands and handling skills to use with the WAGS dogs. There were two dogs present the day of our Volunteer Orientation, and my boys and I had a great time working with them. We were hooked after that!

We have been WAGS Sitters for about one year now, and have had about 10 dogs visit us in our home. Our family enjoys the dogs, mainly because they are so well behaved and almost immediately adapt to our family. Before Kelly leaves a dog with us she always makes sure that we are familiar with the dog’s routine (diet, exercise regime, sleeping habits, health and behavior) and that the dog is comfortable with the house. Some dogs don’t like going down the stairs to the basement. If a dog seems "unsure" Kelly helps the dog get comfortable with the stairs before she leaves and follows up with a call the same day or the next to see how things are going.  Our experience with WAGS has been very positive. We like the fact that we are part of the dog's training and that we can contribute to helping someone obtain a suitable service dog that fits their needs.
